Method

How this page is made.

The US economy's key numbers, from the agencies that publish them.

1. Data

Atlas, the Avos data engine, reads each series through Alpha Vantage: the Federal Reserve, the Treasury, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the Census Bureau and the EIA. Rates and oil are the latest day; the rest is the latest release. The national debt comes straight from the Treasury's Debt to the Penny data.

2. Year on year

Jobs, GDP, retail sales and durable goods are compared with the same month or quarter a year earlier. The series aren't adjusted for the seasons, and a year-on-year change cancels that out.

3. The board

Each character is a flap that turns through the alphabet to its new value, the way old station boards did. Turn the sound on to hear it.

Figures are the latest published and are often revised. This page is for information only and is not financial advice.
